A Greedy Dog
Once there was a dog. He was very greedy. One day, he was hungry. He stole a piece of meat from a butcher’s shop. He took it in his mouth and ran to the forest. He was crossing the bridge of a stream. He looked into the water. He saw his own reflection in it. He thought that there was another dog in the water with a piece of meat. He wanted to get the piece of meat from him. He opened his mouth and barked at the other dog. His own piece of meat fell in the water. Thus, he lost it too.
Moral: Greed is a curse.
A Strange Hen
Once a man had a strange hen. It laid gold eggs. The man was very happy. He got one golden egg every day. He sold the golden eggs and became a rich man. But he was a greedy person. He wanted to get more golden eggs. He wanted to become rich at once. The hen laid only one golden egg in a day. He could not wait for so long. He gave the hen some special diet so that the hen could lay more eggs daily. But his plan failed and the hen laid only one golden egg in a day. He was disappointed. He thought that he could get all the golden eggs by killing the hen. He killed the hen but he got only one golden egg. He repented over his folly but it was of no use.
Moral: Greed is a curse
A Woodcutter and his Axe
Once a poor woodcutter was cutting a tree on the bank of a river. Suddenly his ax slipped and fell into the water. The poor fellow became very sad. A fairy appeared on the scene. She asked him, “Why are you so sad?” The woodcutter told her about his loss. The fairy took pity on him. She dived into the water and brought out a golden ax. The woodcutter told her that was not his ax. The fairy dived again and this time brought out a silver ax. The woodcutter refused again saying, “My ax is made of iron.” The fairy dived and brought out an iron ax. He cried out with joy, “This is my ax.” The fairy was much pleased with his honesty and gave him the other two axes as a reward for his honesty.
Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
An Oldman and his Sons
Once upon a time, an old farmer had three sons. They were not on good terms with one another. The farmer was very much worried due to this. He wanted to see them united. He thought of a plan. He brought a bundle of sticks. He ordered his sons to break the bundle one by one.
They tried their best but could not. Then he untied the bundle and asked them to break the sticks one by one. They broke them easily. At this, he told them to learn a lesson from this example. He advised them to remain united. His sons promised to remain united in the future.
Moral: union is strength
The Fox and the Crow
Once a fox was hungry. It went here and there in search of food but it could not find anything to eat. At last, it reached a garden. There it caught sight of a crow sitting in a tree. It had a piece of cheese in its beak. The fox wished to get that piece of cheese. It hit upon a plan. It began to flatter the crow. He said, “Dear Crow, What a beautiful bird you are! I have heard that your voice is very sweet. Will you sing a song for me please?” The foolish crow felt very proud to hear these words. It opened its beak and cawed. As soon as it did so, the piece of cheese fell on the ground. The fox picked it up and went away.
Moral: Beware of flatterers.
